Fire on Grand Turk
Red Cross Offers Help
On Sunday, September 23rd a major fire hit Grand Turk. A popular restaurant/bar and a series of small apartments adjacent to it were completed gutted by flames, leaving a large group of Haitian Nationals homeless.
Red Cross was on the scene of the fire within minutes, and immediately realized that temporary shelter was needed to be made available to them.hurriedly setting up to make that happen. As a result the Red Cross, with help of the National Department of Disaster and Emergency Management, was able to open up Green Door Shelter which is appointed as overflow shelter. Water and food was provided for them. Red Cross also provided each fire victim with a comfort kit. A group of 20 displaced Haitians were housed for 2 days after which time all had been able to find homes with family and friends
Also on Saturday September 8th a Disaster Preparedness Seminar was held at the Gus Lightborne Sports Centre by joint offices from Grand Turk and Providenciales. Each office gave details on how they
organize for a disaster.
